Menthol is known as a counterirritant. This medication is used to treat minor aches and pains deeper in your muscles and joints (such as arthritis, backache, sprains). Menthol works by cause the skin to feel cool and then warm.

Camphor oil is the oil extracted from the wood of camphor trees and processed by steam distillation. Camphor oil is a common ingredient in pain relief medications, including topical analgesics. It may help treat muscle aches and pains, while stimulating circulation, by interacting with receptors on the sensory nerves. Camphor oil can also help reduce chronic muscle and joint pain over longer periods.

Yerba Buena (Spearmint) is an herb. The leaves and oil are used to make medicine.  Spearmint is used for swelling (inflammation), and gallstones.  It is also used for colds, headaches, local pain-killer, and anti-spasm medication.  Spearmint is applied directly to the skin for arthritis, local muscle and nerve pain.  It is also used for skin conditions such as pruritus and urticaria.

Arnica Montana is a homeopathic topical (skin) pain relief agent. Arnica preparations have shown wound healing, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and pain relieving properties. Arnica’s actions may be due to two chemicals called helenalin and dihyrdohelenalin.

Its flowers and roots have been used to treat bruises, sprains, arthritic pain, and muscle aches.

Aloe Vera is gel from the leaves of aloe plants.  Studies confirm that aloe vera juice has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory (decreases swelling), and analgesic (pain relieving) properties when applied topically (to the skin).   Aloe gel might cause changes in the skin that might help diseases like psoriasis.  Applying to a burn or sunburn can alleviate pain and help the skin heal more quickly. Some people keep an aloe plant handy in the kitchen, a sort of living first aid kit.  People have used if for thousands of years to improve wounds and soften the skin.
